Is Your Environment Helping You Succeed?

Posted by: Dr. Thaddeus Gala

Question for you – Are you at your goal weight? Do you have all the energy you want? Are you off all your medications? Do you see yourself healthier now than you did 10 years ago?

I was recently reading a great book by Marshall Goldsmith titled Triggers. In this book he talks about the idea that our environment has the biggest impact on how we develop habits and reach success. In terms of achieving your health goals, one of the factors that we look at is, who you are surrounding yourself with. You may have heard the saying, “you are the sum of the 5 people you most surround yourself with.” I encourage you to look at your life and take notice of your environment. Are you surrounding yourself with the people and things that will lead you to success? Whether that’s success in losing weight, having more energy, reducing chronic pain, getting off medications, or whatever you are looking for, ask who you are surrounding yourself with. Is your physician on board with that direction? Is your partner on board with that direction? Are your friends and family on board? Is your house set up to help create success? Meaning, if you have a weight loss or health goal – have you filled the house with healthy food options?

Tiggers can come from anywhere. In his book, Marshall Goldsmith talks about the idea the even good people act bad in a different environment or mob setting. On a smaller level, we need to look at the subtleties in our lives. Are you surrounding yourself with people who can help you reach your health goals? If not, what can you do to start creating the environment you need. Do you need to fire your doctor and find one who is on board with the direction you want to go? Maybe you need to hang out with new people, read different books, buy different food for your house, or buy a healthy anti-inflammatory cookbook. Whatever it is, you need to look at the subtleties surrounding your life, and create the environment you need to succeed. Our clients who achieve their goals find people and an environment to support their efforts. Some research suggests that if you take on a new task without support, you have about a 20% chance of succeeding.

When we have people graduate from our programs we ask them what was the most helpful part in the process, and they usually respond that it was their coach. That support is why we have an 80-90% success rate in helping people achieve their health goals. What do you find helpful when setting yourself up for success?

Here’s to making the rest of your years the best of your years.
